CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE – Sean Edwards, ITFA Chairman / Head of Legal at SMBC

Dear Members and Friends,

I write this message with pride and delight after having returned from the ITFA conference in Cape Town. The conference attracted so many delegates from across the African continent and beyond, who experienced, first hand, what ITFA really stands for: current and relevant content, targeted education, effective networking, legendary hospitality and last but not least building on great friendships.

Following the AGM in Cape Town allow me to give a warm welcome to our new Board Member; Andre Casterman who will be responsible for fintech activities. I am sure he will do a fantastic job as he has already shown with his enthusiasm and dedication in the last few months.

On behalf of the ITFA Board, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who attended our 45th Trade and Forfaiting Conference. Even though the flight for some was rather long and tiresome, Cape Town proved to be a great conference destination with over 200 delegates attending this year’s conference. Moreover, the 45th Annual Conference attracted a record number of sponsorships, demonstrating yet again, the vitality of our association and industry. Here I would like to thank Afreximbank, Rand Merchant Bank, Deutsche Bank, Bank of China, Crown Agents Bank, SwissRe Corporate Solutions, Wilben, Willis Towers Watson, Credit Europe Bank, London Forfaiting Company Limited, Sullivan and Worcester, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and Liberty Specialty Markets for their support.

As announced in Cape Town, we will now start working towards organising another spectacular Annual Conference which next year will be held in Budapest Hungary. More information will follow in due course.

Please bear in mind that should you want to refer to the presentations that were delivered during the conference, these can be found in the member area of the ITFA website – click here. However, these are available to ITFA members only. Also, we are pleased to let you know that the conference photos can also be found here.

In this September edition of the ITFA Newsletter you will find 3 very informative and interesting articles, 2 of which are by GTR Editor Shannon Manders, titled ‘Trade Finance’s new Master Participation Agreement: 5 Key Changes and an overview of the Roundtable where Trade Leaders talk Africa’s Finance Gap, these are followed by an article by ITFA’s newest board member, Andre Casterman discussing ‘Transaction Tracking, Visibility and Control being the name of the Game.

We look forward to hearing from you with any feedback you may want to share with us by sending an email to myself, any of the Board Members or to our general email,

Best wishes,
Sean Edwards
