CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE – Sean Edwards, ITFA Chairman / Head of Legal and Special Adviser to the Global Trade Finance Department at SMBC

Dear Members and Friends,

As Christmas approaches, the only real uncertainty the majority of us would like to face, I am sure, is what to buy as presents for our nearest and dearest. Citizens of the UK face the surprise gift of (yet another) election. Whether the results will ruin or make the festive season depends very much on where you stand on Brexit but, whichever party forms the next government, this divisive issue may still not get resolved gifting us more uncertainty into the New Year. Turkey isn’t being left out of the global party either.  Following the lifting of some sanctions in October, we read how Washington got upset about Turkey’s purchase of Russian missile defence systems which could lead to the imposition of sanctions if Turkey does not get rid of them.  The world awaits the outcome of the meeting held between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump in Washington, in mid-November. Simultaneously, we have also seen how Turkey could be hit by EU sanctions in the light of its unauthorised oil drilling off the coast of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Turning to this month’s packed Newsletter, Eleanor Wragg, GTR interviews Geoff Wynne and Paul Coles, a year on from the new BAFT MPA – ‘’The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.’’ Clarissa Dann, Deutsche Bank contributes to this edition with an article titled: ‘’Syntagma Square Synergies in Trade.’’ Following the launch of the new website, the ITFA team summarises the new and improved functions within the website. Dr Rebecca Harding, CEO of Coriolis Technologies provides an interesting read titled: ‘’From Chess to Go: the US and China are heading towards a War of Attrition.’’

We are pleased to announce that two new institutions are joining us; Crowdz and Verifeasy.

May I remind you that all ITFA members are invited to attend the ITFA 20th Anniversary Gala Party. We would greatly appreciate if all Main Delegates could RSVP on by latest Friday 29th November 2019. As always, we encourage you all to attend this milestone event and help us celebrate in style and enjoy an invaluable networking opportunity! This event is strictly for ITFA members only and access to the event is restricted to confirmed guests only. We take the opportunity to remind you about the Educational Seminar which is being organised directly prior to the Christmas Party.

We look forward to hearing from you with any feedback you may want to share with us by sending an email to myself, any of the Board Members or to our general email,

Best wishes,

Sean Edwards
